Frequently Asked Questions
When is a property gain long-term?
If the property is held for more than 24 months before sale, the gain is long-term. Otherwise it is short-term.
What are the LTCG tax options?
For property bought before 23 Jul 2024 you can choose 20% with indexation or 12.5% without it, whichever gives lower tax. Later purchases get 12.5% without indexation.
How is short-term gain taxed?
It is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, plus 4% cess.
How can I reduce capital gains tax?
You can claim exemptions such as Section 54 (reinvest in a house) and Section 54EC (specified bonds), subject to conditions.
Is the result final?
No. It is an estimate. Surcharge, eligibility conditions and your full tax position can change the actual tax. Consult a tax professional.
